An outside living room of contemporary Dutch design for small-scale meetings in the big city.
Urban Living Room is a living room of contemporary Dutch design. A design which focusses on hospitality and small-scale meetings in the big city. It is a social design offering a cosy, temporary space in an urban environment. Here is where people can meet together in a friendly environment.   The Living Room travels from one place to another, from one city to another. Wherever it goes it adds a layer which contrasts with the local environment. The bright, single colour and the cosy, interior feeling make it stand out in urban landscapes, in parks, in natural spaces and in exhibitions.   Join in, play and have fun It is a social meeting point. That is why all kinds of activities are programmed on a small scale.
For example, you can play table games, listen to children's stories and enjoy live music by local musicians.   Public space With the growth of residential areas and increasing economic interests, public space is now under a lot of pressure.   We design a public living room as a temporary social action. An action on a public space where people can get together and have fun and show convincingly to whom the city's public space belongs: the people. The city residents gain a temporary meeting place as a social assertion.   Social context The world is being built up very fast. People are living closer and closer together as cities continue to expand. How do you maintain links with the city when it is changing so quickly? The large scale of the city demands the opposite: a home. To feel at home is a very special feeling. By placing a living room in an unexpected place, we give you a chance to feel at home. The aim of this project is for us to explore this feeling. Contact between people is very important for the development of a city, especially on a cultural and social level. The urban Living Room is a perfect example of how to promote this type of contact. It is a project by Studio ID Eddy and Studio Kortmann.

After graduating from university in 1999, Eddy Kaijser (the founder) began creating artistic projects which he wanted to put into practice. Studio ID Eddy focusses on the public space. The studio initiates rising projects and procedures to change the public space and make citizens aware of their public space. The projects unavoidably raise a debate on the function of the public space, how we use it and how we want to use it in the future. The projects encourage new behaviour in people. So the projects have a strong artistic and social ingredient. The art-design projects may be interactive facilities, urban design, video and photography. Both temporary and permanent projects and products are put into effect. Studio ID Eddy takes part in these projects together with different design studios, design and sustainability universities, architects, manufacturers and local governments.
