A socially aware music event with Sonidero Mandril, picked through the Terraza Matadero open call.
Sonidero Mandril, picked through the Terraza de Verano Matadero public competition, invites us all to the Tropical Terrace, for a socially aware music event.
Their 3-hour musical journey takes us through colonial Africa to the fusion of different beats, following the transportation of slaves to America, focusing on musical reinvention and the meeting of Africans and Native Americans, as well as the white man. They look at the origin of Cumbia music, and the evolution of the instruments, the dances and the intermingling of bodies through their expansion across the American continent.

The journey continues with the spread of Cumbia across America and the invention of new musical sounds that were mixed with new electronic music, giving rise to what was called Nu Cumbia or Electronic Cumbia, which emerged from this new urban subculture together with Tropical Bass, 3Ball and Moombhaton to invade the dance floors of the United States and Europe.

After journeying through these more exciting new tropical genres, we return finally to Africa with its groundbreaking rhythms and electronic sounds, such as Ndombolo, Zouk, Kuduro, Kwaito, Afrothon, and much more. We will also see what is happening today in the big Latin American and African conurbations and how this is reflected in their music, as this too, forms part of the journey.

From the Tropical Terrace we take a current, contemporary and critical look and these continents, far from the stereotypical and folksy images that often fill our collective imagination when regarding “the other”. We will talk about chained bodies and the immaterial chains of copyright, and we will be mixing music that emerges from this meeting of the two.   With this musical journey through the sounds which travelled across the ocean and back, and the new creations arising from that difficult time in history – the slave trade – we hope that our audience will take part, to raise awareness continuously through music.   An interactive terrace in the tradition of the Mexican Sonideros, where you can send messages to your friends and colleagues throughout the session, either from the terrace itself or using the hashtag #TerrazaTropical.
_    SONIDERO MANDRIL   Sonidero Mandril is a group of select DJs and scoundrels from Mexico and Spain. We promote and experiment with tropical sounds that we mix with electronic beats to make anyone who crosses our path get up and dance.   We love to compile music from all over the world, especially from the tropical regions of the planet, with sounds ranging from Cumbia and classic Salsa, to Moombhaton and Tropical Bass, including electronic Cumbia, 3ball, Kuduro, Zouk, Psicomol, Champeta, Coupé-Decalé, Kwaito, Ndombongo, the list goes on.   Our sessions aim to create an electro-tropical ambience, combining classical and traditional sounds with the latest electronic beats.
